Water: Defined

1. Binary compound that occurs at room temperature as a clear colorless odorless tasteless liquid that freezes at 0o C and boils at 100o C.

2. The part of the earth's surface covered with water (such as a river or lake or ocean)

3. Facility that provides a source of water

4. (archaic) once thought to be one of four elements composing the universe (Empedocles)

Water is much more than it’s simple chemical composition of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen, more affectionately known as H20. Water is the widely acknowledged source of the first life on our planet. It is a significant part of all organic material and living creatures and it comprises 70% of the earth’s total surface.

People can live for weeks without food, but without water they would dehydrate and die within days. A small loss of only 2% loss of the water in your body that surrounds your cells can cause up to a 20% decrease in your level of energy. A 10% loss is life threatening.

Ben Franklin once said:

"We will only know the worth of water when the well runs dry"

Where does water come from?

Some 70% of the earth is covered with water. But nearly all is unavailable for human consumption without being processed first. The oceans make up for 97% and the polar ice shields hold another 2%. Only about 1% is soft water from lakes, rivers and underground sources, but even from that tiny amount an increasing part is unsafe for human consumption or it is too deep to economically tap

Tap Water, Is It Safe?

Water from municipal supplies is generally drawn from surface water and may be subject to contamination. In 1990 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) learned that 20% of water from municipal suppliers violated our health standards or did not comply with proper testing codes. In 1991-1992 there were more than 250,000 violations of the Safe Water drinking Act. Over 4% of Americans receive water that containing excessive amounts of harmful microorganisms, and 3% containing pollutants and chemicals above regulated levels. Home purifying units do help, but most do not eliminate bacteria’s that cause harm, lead or many other tiny pathogens. If the proper instructions are not regularly followed and filter consistently replaced then their purpose is all but made ineffective.

Water is a constant in this world. It passes through living creatures and around inorganic matter in a constant cycle of chemical regeneration. Every time this cycle is completed, it faces greater danger of absorbing harmful and toxic elements that leech to it and can be absorbed into our bodies. It is a resource that we must never take for granted and that we must put into our bodies with ever increasing care. vital resource on the planet - fresh water.
